Synopsis: Welcome, to Roman Times! Where the "idea that was Rome" is kept feebly alive by giving the mob what they want: Bread and Circuses!

Gladiator details the journey of (sigh) "Maximus" - a Roman general whose life is destroyed by an ambitious emperor, and wins back his honor and avenges his family by becoming a gladiator.

Just as in real Roman times, the spectacle is the thing. I was not particularly moved by the ham-handed, overly-emotional and ironic plot. Scott gets a bit overwrought here, with clouds skimming superfast across the sky, and other artsy imagery.

But the scenes of Rome, in full glory, are not to be missed. There are some small historical inaccuracies, but the sets, the costumes and computer-generated imagery will take your breath away.

The fight scenes are exciting, and varied, but my one gripe is the confusing editing.
During fight scenes, the shaking, earthquake-like camera angles will make you hold on to the chair arms. But Gladiator is worth the ride.

Rating: 6.5 Laurel Wreaths
